Fox Flyer Companion 1896

[img]1896 Fox Flyer Companion Side by Side made by the Fox Machine Co., offered in contrast to the normal inline tandem bicycle. This idea was patented in 1895 and was the predecessor to the Punett Companion Side by Side manufactured shortly thereafter. Both handle bars steer together via a connecting rod linkage and both pedal cranks work together also and are direct drive to the unique wide rear hub with sprockets at each end. A central seat mounting socket is located on the crossbar which connects the two frames so a single person could attach one of the seats in the middle position and ride the bike alone between the frames using the inner pedals of each crank set. Surely many a gentleman rode the bike this way over to his date's house back in the day! A difference of 100 pounds in riders will still work for this machine so adults and children can have some fun also. There is something about the bicycle that once it gets going that balancing different rider weights doesn't become and issue. A great way to give someone a ride who can't manage a bicycle alone. Wooden chain guards, man's and woman's seats, single tube 28" tires, wooden rims. An 1899 New York Sidepath Bicycle License for Suffolk County and lamp mounting bracket are nice extras.

Above: "Last week Holmes & Son sold their 100th Fox wheel this season, and as a mark of appreciation the factory sent the junior member of the firm an elegant Fox flyer yesterday..." Lansing State Republican, July 21, 1897 (from www.hal.state.mi.us)
