Safety bicycle 1888

1888 crossframe safety bicycle (in 1880s, diamond frames were already in use in certain types of safety bicycles). 30″ equal wheels. Fitted with Joseph Bates Drawbolt Chain Adjuster.

A safety bicycle became very popular beginning in the late 1880s as an alternative to the penny-farthing (or "ordinary") and is a direct ancestor to modern bicycles. Early bicycles of this style were known as safety bicycles because they were noted for, and marketed as, being safer than the high wheelers they were replacing.
